Imaginary commodities

Section 1, Chapter 1.1

Marx writes:

A commodity is, in the first place, an object outside us, a thing that by its properties satisfies human wants of some sort or another. The nature of such wants, whether, for instance, they spring from the stomach or from fancy, makes no difference.

Die Ware ist zunächst ein äußerer Gegenstand, ein Ding, das durch seine Eigenschaften menschliche Bedürfnisse irgendeiner Art befriedigt. Die Natur dieser Bedürfnisse, ob sie z.B. dem Magen oder der Phantasie entspringen, ändert nichts an der Sache. (S. 49)

La mercancía es por de pronto un objeto exterior, una cosa que, por sus propiedades, satisface necesidades humanas -el que procedan, por ejemplo, del estómago o de la fantasía- no hace a la cosa. (p. 43)

The reference to fancy (Phantasie) lets talk about imaginary commodities. This is important, because in the rest of the chapter Marx talks about the commodities as material things. Therefore, Marx identifies use and consumption.

Use values become a reality only by use or consumption.
