Representatives of commodities

Marx says against Rousseau and Social contract:

The persons exist for one another merely as representatives of, and, therefore, as owners of, commodities. In the course of our investigation we shall find, in general, that the characters who appear on the economic stage are but the personifications of the economic relations that exist between them.

Wir werden überhaupt im Fortgang der Entwicklung finden, daß die ökonomischen Charaktermasken der Personen nur die Personifikationen der ökonomischen Verhältnisse sind, als deren Träger sie sich gegenübertreten. (S. 100)

Dicho más generalmente: en el curso de la exposición veremos que los disfraces económicos de las personas no son sino personificaciones de las relaciones y circunstancias económicas como portadoras de las cuales se enfrentan unas con otras. (p. 96)
